Setting the scene: This sample chapter of The Ivory House is its first, the prophet Elijah’s famous confrontation with Jezebel’s priests of Baal upon Mount Carmel. The Bible story begins in 1 Kings 17:
Now Elijah the Tishbite, one of the settlers of Gilead, said to Ahab: “As Adonai God of Israel lives, before whom I stand, there shall be no dew or rain these years, except at my word.”
The story begins three and a half years after Elijah called down a drought upon Israel. The prophet has arrived at Mount Carmel accompanied by his servant, Yashar, the son of the widow of Zarephath, to challenge Jezebel’s 450 priests of Baal to a battle between gods.
